SAN DIEGO –August 5, 2011 Cali Bamboo, a premier manufacturer of green building materials made primarily from bamboo, and the Surfrider Foundation today announced that Steven Roeder took first place in the National Greenscape Challenge.

The La Jolla resident replaced the grass in his front yard with native plants and installed gutters that flow into rain collection containers that are used to water fruit trees.

“We received a huge response for this contest which demonstrates that a lot of people are already taking steps to make a difference with their yards. We saw everything from the use of drought tolerant plants & permeable surfaces to  expansive bamboo decking projects,” says Jeff Goldberg, CEO and President of Cali Bamboo. “It was fun to see the various projects submitted throughout the U.S. on our interactive map and we look forward to meeting Steven at the Celebrity Expression Session this year!”

The contest was inspired by Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Gardens campaign and participants were asked to submit their sustainable landscaping project. Steven and his guest will receive transportation to Los Angeles on Friday, September 9 to enjoy an all-expense paid weekend, including a 30-minute surf session with a celebrity following the Celebrity Expression Session event, an eco-friendly surfboard for use during the surf session and access to the VIP party on Friday evening.

“This was an ideal contest to raise awareness for our Ocean Friendly Gardens campaign and the issues surrounding ocean pollution. It provided great examples of how others can create an eco-friendly garden to reduce excessive watering, and we hope it will be a stepping stone to get others involved,” said Matt McClain, Surfrider Foundation’s Director of Marketing and Communications.  “Steven and his guest are in for a treat at the Celebrity Expression Session. We’ve already secured numerous celebrities to participate in the event so it should be a great time!”

Melissa McCollum from Lawndale, Calif. won second place and secured a $500 Cali Bamboo gift certificate while Julie L. from Washington, DC took third place and will receive a $250 Cali Bamboo gift certificate redeemable for a wide variety of green building products.

1. Steven R - La Jolla, CA
In June of 2010, in cooperation with Surfrider, I replaced the grass in my front yard with native plants. As you can see from the pictures, everything is really thriving, blooming and probably needing a trim. I have not watered my front yard since last October. Also, I installed rain gutters which divert water to rain collection containers. The water not captured in the containers is diverted to two swales. The water from the collection containers is used to water the fruit trees on my property.
2. Melissa M. - Lawndale, CA
Librarians, teens, other community volunteers, and a few professional partners built the Lawndale Ocean Friendly Garden in order to conserve water, reduce runoff to the Pacific Ocean, grow fruits and vegetables, and educate other residents about the benefits of green landscaping. The garden saved the City of Lawndale over 60,000 gallons of water during its first year using design elements, such as edible native plants, point-source drip irrigation, weather-based irrigation, natural woodchip mulch, redirected downspouts, and added contour to hold water. Garden produce is used for cooking classes and healthy snacks at the Lawndale Library and donations to local individuals and families as well as the Lawndale Senior Lunch Program.
3. Julie L - Washington D.C.
Below is a description of the recently installed David Stemper Memorial Rain Garden, a demonstration LID project of the DC Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. The garden is located at L and Half Streets SE in Washington, DC, a few short blocks off the Anacostia River, one of the ten most polluted rivers in the country, and in view of the US Capitol building. The existing surface of compacted construction backfill was essentially impervious. The garden uses shade trees, native plants, pervious surfaces, and swales to contain and absorb rain water that falls on the site. The trees are red maple and river birch, and the swales are planted with a native wildflower seed mix. Walkways are covered with bluestone gravel. The site is in an highly urban environment, on a corner among high-rise buildings. The garden was designed by Justin Thorn, landscape architect with EcoSolutions and a Surfrider Foundation volunteer. The garden was installed by volunteers from Surfrider's DC Chapter and the surrounding neighborhood. Funding for materials and construction services came from REI, with additional support from Norcross Wildlife Foundation. Temporary use of the land was provided by Cohen Companies of Rockville, Maryland. Chapel Valley Landscape Company donated excavation services. Trees were purchased at Frager's Hardware. Gravel and topsoil came from DC Materials; other materials came from Standard Supplies. The garden is dedicated to David Stemper, a Surfrider volunteer and surfer who passed away in 2010.
