Vegetable Gardens: Good for the Environment and Your Wallet
April is the ideal month to start a vegetable garden! During the Second World War, many American families began “Victory Gardens” as a means of saving money and food, so that more could be sent to allied troops. At one point, so many homes were partaking in this effort that 40% of all the food consumed in the country was coming from these vegetable gardens. Talk about self-sustainable living!
Today, as food prices around the world continue to rise, one money-saving option is to plant a home or community vegetable garden. By growing your own food and doing more shopping at local farmers’ markets, you cut down on CO2 in the atmosphere, support community agriculture, and save money at the same time. You’ll also be saving water by replacing part of the grass in your lawn with vegetables. Not to mention the satisfaction that comes from enjoying fresh food you grew yourself! Finally add some bamboo edging to your garden for a special touch. Learn more about when and how to grow different veggies here!
Happy Spring!
