(Marc Bailey) It is green week here on San Diego Living and we are talking about some renewable types of materials that you can use, whether you’re doing a remodel or new construction. And absolutely at the forefront of this movement right now is bamboo. I mean it grows like a weed, and it is tough as nails. So the guys from Cali Bamboo are here today. Jeff Goldberg and Tanner Haigwood are joining us here today to introduce you to this incredible building material. Good to see you guys today. Now I want to talk to you about how Cali Bamboo got started first, because I hear it’s a pretty good story. (Jeff Goldberg) Yeah. I think so. We got started about 2003. Tanner and I were on a surf trip in Hawaii, and we were kinda living there at the time. And in order to keep the trip going further we would take on odd jobs. (Bailey) Ok, yeah. My brother went on one of those trips after high school, and he did a lot of odd jobs in Hawaii during that time. Yeah. (Goldberg) Well, I don’t know if he did this, but we were cutting bamboo down. It was a pretty odd job. It was the first time we had ever done that before and kind of had one of those Eureka moments while we were doing that – and realized that bamboo is extremely strong, it’s very durable and green. And you know what? I think we can make great building products out of this. (Bailey) And it absolutely grows at this incredible rate, so it’s not just renewable – you almost have to work to keep up with it sometimes. (Goldberg) Exactly. (Bailey) Alright, so let’s talk about some of the things we can do with bamboo and then talk about it’s relative strength compared to other things. You want to start Tanner, with maybe flooring. (Tanner Haigwood) Sure, love to. As you can see here, we offer a wide variety of colors and styles. Cali Bamboo is also proud to offer the hardest wood floors in the world. As you can see here, Cali Bamboo HD Color Grain Floors, you can see there, is actually four times as hard as say something like a traditional red oak. (Bailey) Now there’s a hardness rating here, and maybe folks may not understand how to relate to that, but I think what I’m seeing out of this is by far and away Cali Bamboo comes out on this particular scale much harder than any flooring material or type of wood that we’re talking about here. (Haigwood) That’s right. If you drop a can of soup in your kitchen, it’s not going to dent. If you have pets or kids or high traffic—(Bailey) So my dogs can run around on this. (Haigwood) Absolutely. That’s right. (Bailey) And the stiletto heels that the ladies like so much that have the six-inch—(Haigwood) Lady and dog-friendly. (Bailey) Now I know you have a little demonstration here because I want to be sure to get to everything. I’m gonna stand over here, and you go ahead and explain the fencing material to me here. (Goldberg) Sure, sure. So our bamboo fencing product is not quite as processed as the flooring. It’s the whole canes of bamboo, and it’s gone through a special curing process so that it will last outside for 10, 20 years. Ok? So we all know bamboo is the fastest growing plant on Earth. It’s very green, and we say how strong it is, but we thought it would be better to show you how strong it is. (Bailey) Ok, cover your eyes folks. I forgot my safety glasses so I’m just gonna look in the other direction and make sure I don’t get any splinters here. Ok, go ahead. Give it a rip. (Goldberg) So this is a cedar plank of fencing. This is a traditional wood product that everyone uses in their homes -- that people have in their neighborhoods. So we’ll compare cedar versus our bamboo fencing. First, we’ll do a little smack on this… [Breaks wood in half.] (Bailey) Woah! It’s like a carnival game, isn’t it? You just ring the bell. (Goldberg) We can see it didn’t take that much to break. Now we have the exact same-sized section, cut from one of our fencing rolls. And we’re gonna do the same force on it and see what happens. So, a little smack on it… [Hits bamboo panel.] (Bailey) Woah! Nothing. Nothing. (Goldberg) And we can see that bamboo is much, much stronger than regular wood. (Bailey) Now you’ve got a decking material too that I want to make sure that we don’t run out of time and get to that because composite decking and materials other than wood are kind of in vogue right now, but there’s some problems with some of the other products, you know. They warp, they’re a little more difficult to work with, and so forth. This is a beautiful product, but you gotta tell me how it holds up compared to wood. That looks like wood. (Haigwood) Well, let me just say this. We’ve been working on this product for say three or four years – just testing and testing and testing. What makes this product so unique, it’s actually composed of 70% post-consumer plastics. (Bailey) Plastics. So you talk about green. This is recycling plastic bottles. (Haigwood) It’s literally made out of these types of items. The other remaining part is composed of – (Goldberg) The other 30% which also makes this extremely green is we take the bamboo dust that we produce the waste out of our flooring and combine it with the recycled plastics. (Bailey) So there is no waste here. (Goldberg) There is absolutely no waste, and it’s a great product. It ends up being about twice as dense as most other decking products available. (Bailey) And easy to work with I’m assuming. Holds its color, holds its shape. (Haigwood) Very low-maintenance. Lasts for decades. (Goldberg) Extremely durable. (Bailey) Alright. Cali Bamboo. Folks are going to want to come down and see you guys. These are the guys that came up with the concept. These are the guys to talk to. Plain and simple. So we cut out the middle man there, right? And 10% discount to anybody who says we saw you on San Diego Living. (Goldberg) Absolutely. You’re welcome to come down to our showroom in Sorrento Valley off of Mira Mesa Boulevard. CaliBamboo.com is a great way to start and see all of our products. And I think we’re going to be—(Haigwood) We’re also going to be at the Del Mar Home Show October 14th – the whole weekend. Just come out and look for bamboo and you’ll find us. (Goldberg) And maybe we’ll give you another demonstration. (Bailey) Or let folks play. Hand the bat to them, and let them have at it. Guys, thank you so much. Cali Bamboo. It’s green week. This is as green as it gets folks, so check them out. Go down and see them at the store. Now the code word will make it easy for you today. It is “bamboo.” B-A-M-B-O-O, bamboo. I just spelled it right, didn’t I? Yeah ok, just checkin’. Alright, when we come back we’re gonna talk about really some healthy eating stuff. It’s good stuff. I promise. San Diego Living, coming right back |
