Green Shoots Blog
Jodi’s family loves their newly remodeled man cave décor featuring Cali Bamboo flooring and an accent wall of natural cork bark. Built by the original owners in the 60s, the guest house now plays host to daily workouts, karaoke night and the occasional game day party. Jodi is so glad to have their worn-out carpeting replaced with sleek and refined Aged Hickory Cali Vinyl™ flooring, it’s much easier to keep clean and looking great. If a wide screen tv and mini-fridge stocked with cold craft brew weren’t enough, Jodi and her husband installed a dart board and an entire wall of natural cork bark that acts as the perfect backboard for stray darts that miss the mark. One thing’s for certain, this modern-day play room is on point!

I stand all day and have low back issues — would this be okay for me? Backing help?
Hi Celeste,
Our Mute Step and Longboards lines have an integrated backing that adds comfort. You can also add an underlayment like Cali Complete for even more cushion. Our cork flooring is by far our most comfy flooring option.
Can this be done over tile in the kitchen and bathroom?
Hi Tracey,
Yes, as long as there is sufficient clearance for your doors. The easiest way to check is to call us at 1(888)788-2254 and get a free sample to lay down on the floor.
I have the Cali Vinyl Pro Mute Step already installed. I have area rugs placed throughout my house. What type of rug pad should I be using. One company says for the hallway, that I shouldn’t use a felt, that I should use latex because of a tripping hazard, but your document says, no rubber or latex. It’s a little confusing.
We recommend fabric pads because there have been rare cases where rubber or latex pads have reacted with the floor finish and caused permanent damage. We’ve written them off from a liability standpoint, but that’s not to say a rubber or latex pad won’t work or be just fine. If you still want to try and use a rubber or latex pad you could, at your own risk, place a sample square on the floor in an inconspicuous location like a closet, put something with some weight on it and if nothing happens and there is no damage after a week or two it is likely safe for use elsewhere.
I HAVE VINLY FLOORING WITH WOOD UNDERLAMENT CAN I INSTALL OVER THIS? WITH CALI
Hi Patrick,
You can install Cali Vinyl Pro over any subfloor that is clean, flat and dry.
As long as the existing floors are clean, level and dry. You may want to get a sample of flooring to confirm all of your doors will have enough clearance.
I have asthma and learning about lvp flooring concerned about the toxin and vocs in thos type of flooring ive always had hardwood or porclin tile in our last home
Hi Lynn,
With vinyl floors, you’re going to want to keep an eye on phthalates, this compound can be off-gassed if a manufacturer uses cheaper plasticizers. Since you have asthma, I’d steer clear of a manufacturer that can’t produce emissions test results. Here’s ours: Cali Vinyl Phthalate Test Results
I am thinking of using your product in a 3 season sunroom. During the winter months it will be heated sporadically. Will cold temperatures (below 32 f) hurt the product
Freezing temperatures will make the product brittle and will crack if stepped on. While it isn’t warranted for this type of installation, as long as you don’t use the room when it is cold, it should be fine.
We are thinking of using this product through out the whole house and I would love to do the attached 2 car garage. My garage is very clean and our cars dont leak oil. Could we use this product in our garage also? Would there be any concerns you could tell us?
Hi David,
While it wouldn’t be warranted in the garage, as long as you used Cali Vinyl Pro it should be fine. For added protection against separation you could also glue it down with Titebond 670.
I have the aged hickory flooring. Can you give me the price for the transitions and the stair treads? Also I have installed it in an upstairs bedroom i was told we needed underlayment. Now I’m going to instahl it out in the hallway and into the game room do I need to put underlayment because I did in the bedroom or is it ok to do it without.
Hi Debbie,
So there are two ways to go about this. The easiest would be to call us and speak to one of our helpful reps, they are happy to put it all together for you. The second option is to visit lowes.com and search for “aged hickory”, the related trim and accessories should appear. You only really need underlayment if you are installing over concrete and you really want the added comfort and thermal/sound insulation or if the new flooring will “meet up” with a previous install that has underlayment, there will be a slight height discrepancy, which would then warrant underlayment.
Hi
We just rented an apartment with carpets.
We don’t want to make any problems to and we need to return the apartment with the carpets after.
Can we do it directly on the carpets?
We don’t recommend laying any flooring over carpet. You could however lay down plywood, then you could lay flooring on the plywood.
Hi!
So does the Vinyl Pro need a pad and a moisture barrier?
It only needs a moisture barrier over concrete subfloors. Everything else is good to go.
Hi, what are the specific differences between the pro and plus versions
Thanks, Jay
Plus has a bamboo composite core and an integrated cork underlayment, while Pro has a limestone composite core and no underlayment.
The pro says it does not require transition pieces. I assume the plus does. What transition pieces does that refer to?
Correct. This is referring to having the floor flow from room to room. The Pro line can be floated and flow seamlessly from room to room. The Plus line requires T-moldings in all doorways, essintially breaking the floor up into different areas. You can, however, go seamless with Plus if you glue down.
would you recomend his product for walls ?
Hi Robert,
You mean putting the vinyl flooring on the wall? Sure, we’ve seen that, and it looks really cool!
Can Calibamboo be applied to a ceiling?
Hi Claudette,
People have done it, but it’s definitely something you’ll want a professional to install as you don’t want these heavy planks coming down. If you are dead set on doing it yourself, I’d recommend using our Cali Vinyl Plus line, it’s lightweight and poses less risk of injury. Legal disclaimer: Installing Cali flooring anywhere but the floor is not covered by the warranty.
I am looking at the White Aspen Calivinyl with the built in cork underlayment to be placed on a concrete basement floor , would any additional underlayment be needed?
Hi Donald,
While you don’t need an additional underlayment, we do require a moisture barrier over concrete. We recommend rolling on Titebond 531+.
Do you have a dealer in Utah?
Hi Chelle,
Sure do, do you have a zip code so I can find one nearest you? FYI, we also offer most of our products at your local Lowe’s Home Improvement store.
Is it challenging for me to install myself or do you recommend a handyman? I prefer to save the money. And truly feel capable but only if not challenging. Are all instructions and material needs included? Looking to redo my basement and pull up old rugs
Hi Tisha,
It isn’t hard but it’s tuff on your back and knees. As long as you don’t have issues with either of these, the process is fairly straightforward. We have detailed installation instructions here. We’re also just a phone call away should you run into any snags along the way.
How can access the detailed instructions?
Click the link in the comment and it should take you to our installation page where you can choose which product and method you would like to install.
