The Cali Bamboo Story
It all started with a surf trip.
In 2004, two college friends Jeff Goldberg and Tanner Haigwood set off on a year-long surf trip in search of good waves, good times, and a plan to find an idea for a company that could make a difference. To help fund the adventure, they took up part-time work while living on Kauai, HI. One of the odd jobs was chopping down bamboo, leading to an epiphany: the realization that bamboo could and should be used as a building product in place of traditional trees. Not only is bamboo the fastest growing plant on earth and rapidly-renewable, it could also help reduce global warming and save animal habitat loss – the number one cause for extinction. Cali Bamboo was born!
Cali Bamboo’s mission is to make a difference today for a more sustainable future tomorrow, specifically through the promotion of green building materials as beautiful, durable, viable alternatives to traditional products. For example, bamboo is the fastest-growing plant on earth, and it can be continuously re-harvested without damage to the plant or its surrounding ecosystem. By manufacturing high-quality materials made from renewable resources, the company helps to maintain old growth forests for future generations–reducing CO2 emissions, deforestation, and loss of natural habitat for more breathable air and a much brighter future.
Meet Our Founders
Jeff Goldberg, Founding Cali Bamboo President, CEO
Jeff founded Cali Bamboo to have a positive impact on the planet and expand the use of green building materials. In-depth research confirmed his notion that bamboo is not only an economically viable source of fiber and construction material, but is also one of the most environmentally-friendly materials available today. Raised in Columbia, Maryland, Jeff earned a B.S. in Biological Resources Engineering from the University of Maryland before moving to California. He has worked previously at several San Diego biotech companies in the areas of technology development including early stage drug discovery processes, nanofluidics, and automation of these processes. Jeff recently won the San Diego Business Journal’s Most Admired CEO award.
Tanner Haigwood, Founding Vice President Business Development
Also hailing from, Maryland, Tanner has lived and worked around the world including Alaska and Argentina. His personal pledge to have a positive impact on planet Earth led to his partnership with Goldberg and the formation of Cali Bamboo to promote greater use of renewable resources. He has committed the company to contributing a percentage of its revenue to environmental organizations and actively participating in eco-friendly programs through volunteering and green business habits. Tanner has a background in sales and marketing, international relations, and project management in residential and commercial construction. He holds a B.S. in Dietetics from the University of Maryland.
